Summary

SUMMARY: Under general direction, to assist physicians in the application, modification, and removal of casts, appliances, and prosthetic devices; to care for such equipment; and to do related work as required.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.

  1. Under the written orders of a physician, applies, modifies, repairs and removes casts, splints, braces, surgical collars, tractions and pylons.

  2. Makes padding’s for shoes and plaster casts of feet for patients.

  3. Fits crutches and canes and instructs patients in the safe and proper use and the hazards to be avoided.

  4. Evaluates appliances as to proper fit and makes adjustments as indicated.

  5. Maintains cast room supplies and equipment including ordering, inventory and repair.

  6. Responsible for the appropriate documentation of patient care.

  7. Responsible for the completion and submission of charge documents.

  8. Transfers patients to gurney and wheelchairs and transports patients to and from treatment areas.

  9. Responsible for environmental maintenance of patient treatment areas and work areas as assigned.

  10. Practices proper safety precautions and procedures.

  11. Performs related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of work experience in an acute care hospital in the application, modification, removal and repair of casts, orthopedic appliances and devices. OR II Completion of a recognized orthopedic technology program that includes practical experience. OR III Two years work experience in an Alameda County Medical Center classification requiring direct patient care on the orthopedic wards/clinics or physical therapy and/or occupational therapy clinics, with receptivity to additional on the job training as required.
